This activity serves as a formative assessment that gives the students immediate feedback on everything they've learned in this lesson. The applet directly relates to the standard because once the student has found the correct placement of the focus and directrix, they have to use these values to derive the equation of the parabola.
Again, we liked the idea of using technology as a TOD type activity because it gives the students immediate feedback, and allows them as many chances as they'd like to get three correct in a row, instead of only 3 tries. It also assesses their understanding of the definition of a parabola (the set of all points equidistant from the focus and directrix) as well as assesses their understanding of the standard "Derive the equation of a parabola given a focus and directrix."
