Linear Functions, Modeling, and Rates of Change
The unit is an introduction to functions through using relationships. The materials is suited for grade 8 through high school students depending on their comfort level and previous knowledge of algebra. The unit starts with the introduction to relationship then gradually leads towards linear functions and ultimately quadratic functions. The activities will cognitively challenge students with different applets, graphing with Geometer's Sketchpad, and exploration using those concepts. Each lesson can be divided into two days depending on students' progress. There are additional resources related to each topic available at the end of the lesson. Finally, the unit completes with a summative assessment which should be conducted at the end of all lessons to assess students' understanding on topics. This function introduction is designed to act as a precursor to some of the more accessible ideas within calculus to create a foundation for future success through mathematical discourse and argumentation
